GRACE NOTES V
After a blissful week of relaxation on the Scottish coast, I’ve landed back into reality with a jolt [i.e. a 6-hour car trip, four hours of sleep, and a 3-hour train journey leading to a whirlwind 48 hours in London]. A reality not without purpose or excitement however; yesterday involved one of those surreal ‘is this really happening to me’ once-in-a-lifetime experiences. I spent the day spent with the incredibly talented hair and makeup team from Pinewood Studios [i.e. the artists behind Game of Thrones, the Marvel movies, Pirates of the Caribbean etc.!!!], a truly fascinating and awe-inspiring experience to say the least.

Landlocked between Manchester’s Northern Quarter and the Arndale shopping centre, Oklahoma is the trinket store with a difference. The contents and decor are so eclectic and diverse that a visit feels more akin to a museum tour, and purchase seems almost unnecessary. But, with one-of-a-kind soft furnishings, USA-imported stationery, luxury candles, and designer tableware on offer, it’s easy to surrender one’s purse. You could easily while away an hour in the bazaar-like surroundings, ending up sipping on fresh juices and tucking into exotic salads at the small instore cafe, after stocking up on a year’s worth of birthday cards and reminiscing over the nostalgic collection of retro pocket-money toys.

Life Moves Pretty Fast

Having lost count of how many times I’ve watched Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and having regarded Pretty in Pink my favourite movie since my twelfth birthday, there was no way I was going to let this homage to 80s movies [from one of my favourite writers] pass beneath my radar. The book is peppered with quotes, lists, and playlists, but is more than just a nostalgic love letter to the films of yesteryear; each chapter takes on an iconic film from the decade and translates the lessons it teaches its viewers. It also contrasts the changes between movies then and now; revealing how misogynism and the infantilisation of men [frequently deployed in modern male-led comedies] are in many ways a backlash to the [to some extent] progressive gender values promoted in many 80s movies. It’s the kind of thought-provoking book that will make you think twice about every film you’ve ever seen, and ever will see.
