Everything You Need To Know About Microneedling Facials

This advanced treatment targets multiple skin concerns ranging from acne scars to loss of collagen.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a safe and effective procedure which involves gently creating micro punctures in the skin in order to trigger the body’s natural wound healing response. These tiny micropunctures are delivered at a high speed so do not scar or damage skin. The skin’s response involves intensive renewal, repair, and rejuvenation, which is why microneedling has benefits for a number of different skin concerns.

What are the benefits of microneedling?

The healing response includes the production of elastin and collagen, which plumps up the skin - helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, loose skin, and indented acne scars. In addition, microneedling helps to reduce hyperpigmentation (such as post-acne marks) by breaking up the excess pigment in the top layers of the skin and replacing these cells with fresh, new, unscarred ones.

Professional microneedling treatments are used alongside special microneedling serums as the needling encourages the absorption of active ingredients. The serum used on your skin will be chosen based on your skin concerns and goals – so can help the treatment to go further in terms of addressing things like hyperpigmentation and signs of ageing.

The main benefits of microneedling include:

  • Reduced lines and wrinkles

  • Faded acne scars and hyperpigmentation

  • Reduced appearance of pores

  • Improved skin quality

  • Smoother skin texture

  • More radiant and even-toned skin

  • Plumper skin

What are the side effects of microneedling?

Your skin may appear red and feel a little more sensitive than usual in the 24-48 hours following a microneedling treatment. This is totally normal! It’s advised not to book a microneedling to close to an event or photoshoot.

What are the risks of microneedling?

Microneedling too frequently can cause inflammation and irritation, and can even lead to bruising or broken capillaries – this is why it’s always advised to see a professional for a microneedling treatment rather than attempting at-home.

Is microneedling suitable for my skin?

Microneedling is not recommended for those with eczema, rosacea, active acne, or very sensitive skin as with these skin conditions there is a risk of increased irritation and inflammation, and possibility of infection.

How often do I need a microneedling treatment?

Some people will experience benefits immediately after their first treatment, however depending on your skin concerns and their severity, you may be advised to book in for additional appointments. Most clients benefit from 3-4 treatments, each spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Since it takes time for collagen and elastin to properly generate in the skin, you should expect to wait 1-2 months to see results for things like lines, wrinkles, loose skin, and acne scars.

Does microneedling hurt?

Depending on the depth of needle used, microneedling can range from feeling slightly uncomfortable to slightly painful. Most clients experience no more than mild discomfort.

What’s the downtime for microneedling?

To ensure proper healing, it’s advised to avoid wearing makeup, working out, swimming, drinking alcohol, or exposing skin to sun or extreme temperatures for 24-48 hours after a microneedling session. You should also avoid using ingredients like retinoids and acids for a week following the treatment, and instead keep your skincare routine simple and focussed on hydrating and calming skin. Wearing SPF50 is essential after a microneedling treatment as UV exposure will impede the healing process.

How much is a microneedling treatment?

My Level 4 Facial microneedling treatment costs £160 – this includes a deep cleanse before the treatment, post-procedure product application, and also involves the use of a soothing mask and LED light therapy - which helps to boost the effects of the microneedling, reduce inflammation, and encourage healing.

How long does a microneedling facial take?

Including pre- and post-treatment steps, my microneedling facial takes one and a half hours.
