August Style Picks | 2014

Processed with VSCOcam with hb1 presetSo as you can see, I got a little bit carried away in Topshop this month... This is actually pretty unusual for me - I have a real love/hate relationship with the place, and can go months without seeing anything appealing. The last few weeks however I've found it hard (read: impossible) to walk out empty handed. Topshop Flower Jacquard A-Line Skirt I fell in love with this skirt so hard that (after days of my size being out of stock) I ordered it two sizes too big in the hope that maybe, just maybe, it would run small and fit me. Who was I kidding? It was roomy enough for two. Disgruntled I returned it instore only to find that they did actually have an abundance of my size in stock (that online stock check is not to be trusted). This skirt is even more beautiful IRL than it is in any photo. It's really good quality material, well-made, and fits beautifully.

Topshop Vixen Slingback Pointed Shoes I love wearing heels to give a bit of formality, elegance, and 'put together-ness' to a look, but sometimes they're just not practical... The next best thing? A pair of pointed flats. They're as practical, comfy, and easy to wear as your bog standard ballet pumps but the point somehow makes them that little bit more chic...

Topshop MOTO Blue Vintage Wash Jamie Jeans The last time I bought a pair of blue jeans was when I was in high school, so these were a 100% guilt-free purchase. I'm super fussy with jeans, they literally have to be perfect in every single way (colour, texture, shape, fit) for me to even consider purchasing (hence why I've spent the past 4 years practically living in my beloved black Leigh Jeans. And because I have quite a narrow frame (read: NO hips) I can't really pull off this summer's highly coveted baggy/shredded look (when you spent your childhood wearing clothes that were too big for you, it doesn't really feel cool). Distressed however, I can do. Although it doesn't have quite the same effect in black jeans as blue - hence this purchase. These jeans are very similar to the Leigh jeans, albeit a little sturdier and thicker. They're still super soft and have washed really well - I'm always uber nervous of washing new jeans in case the fit changes, but these stayed exactly the same. Their only downfall? Being the butt of many a "You should take those jeans back, they have holes in them" joke (what is it with the over 40's and that line??).

Cooperative Flippy Jersey Dress in Grey Drumroll please for the only non-Topshop piece to make it into this edit... Cooperative are one of my favourite brands at Urban Outfitters and this simple grey dress was calling my name from first sight. It's perfect for those days when you're feeling a bit "blah" and can't reeeeaally be bothered to put too much thought into your outfit choice. I throw this on with black tights and heeled boots, easy peasy. And on days when I really feel like pushing the boat out? I undo the top few buttons and layer it over a lacy black cami. Crazy, I know.
